TASK 3

Development & Design

1. Select one of the 3 ideas you proposed in Task 2.
2. Develop it through colour exploration, composition, typeface,
positioning, etc., with design principles in mind.
3.| Finalise your idea.
4. Create your final design in A4 size, JPEG format in at least 300dpi
pixel size. Label the design as <Your Name_Title of Design_Task3>.
 5.Write a 200-word rationale explaining/defending: i) the decisions
made in your design, ii.) the meaning/purpose of the design and iii) the design principles that are employed to create the design.

Sketch :

At the end of task2, I chose sketch3 to continue the design. This sketch mainly uses the design principle of space and color contrast, and reflects the spatial sense of the environment and the visual impact sense through strong color contrast

Draw ideas :

After reviewing the initial concept of this sketch and considering my teacher’s feedback, I continued refining the piece by drawing inspiration from the composition and colors used in the film. Blade Runner 2049 makes extensive use of silhouetted figures and monochromatic color schemes to create a clean yet atmospheric composition, giving it a sense of sophistication and storytelling. This approach aligns well with the design principles I have learned and effectively highlights the characteristics of my work.

Development of sketch :

Finalized artwork:

Rationale :

This painting reflects Blade Runner 2049’s themes of identity and existence. The silhouette in the foreground is K, standing before a massive fallen replicant head. This symbolizes the fate of replicants—once cutting-edge creations, now abandoned relics of a failed past. It represents how society discards artificial life, despite their intelligence and emotions.

The cold blue and gray tones create a dystopian atmosphere, emphasizing loneliness and the isolation caused by technology. K’s dark silhouette contrasts sharply with the glowing replicant face, making him look small and insignificant compared to the larger story of synthetic life. The replicant’s red eye draws attention, symbolizing the remnants of artificial consciousness, as if it still sees or remembers something.

The foggy cityscape in the background adds to the sense of mystery and decay, mirroring the film’s portrayal of a hyper-technological but soulless world. The ruined environment suggests a past disaster, making K’s presence feel even more isolated. The entire composition captures K’s journey of self-discovery, blurring the line between human and machine. This artwork aligns with Blade Runner 2049’s core message—finding oneself and questioning what it truly means to exist.

At last, I decided to name this artwork “Red Eye Remains”. The giant mechanical face, with its red eyes, shows it’s still watching, still conscious, still “alive,” even tho the world’s moved on. That lingering gaze tells the story of a bionic like K, who went thru so much, broke free from mechanical limits, and finally felt real emotions and thoughts.

Summary of design principles in artwork :

1. Gestalt Theory
Figure-Ground Relationship
The silhouette of the character and the large mechanical head create a strong foreground-background contrast, making the main subjects clear.
Proximity
The large size of the mechanical head and its position close to the character make them feel connected, forming a strong narrative relationship.
Closure
The character’s silhouette is clear, but the facial details are missing. This makes the viewer naturally fill in the missing information and recognize it as a full figure.

2. Contrast
Color Contrast
The red mechanical eye stands out against the cool-toned background, drawing attention.
Light and Dark Contrast
The dark silhouettes in the foreground contrast with the brighter background, making the image more dramatic.
Shape Contrast
The rigid, geometric city buildings contrast with the irregular, damaged mechanical head, emphasizing the clash between technology and destruction.

3. Emphasis
Main focal points : The character and the mechanical head. Their size and position naturally draw the viewer’s focus.
The red mechanical eye : Since it is the only strong color in the image, it immediately grabs attention.

4. Balance
Asymmetrical balance
The character and the mechanical head are positioned toward the left, but the city buildings in the background are evenly distributed, creating a stable yet dynamic composition.

5. Repetition

Repetition of building shapes
The multiple rectangular buildings create a sense of order and reinforce the cyberpunk city feel.
Repetition of dark silhouettes
The foreground debris, character, and mechanical parts all use dark silhouettes, making the composition more unified.

6. Movement
Perspective lines guide the eye : The positioning of the buildings creates a sense of depth, naturally leading the viewer’s gaze toward the background.
The character’s posture : The way the character is facing the mechanical head encourages the viewer to follow their gaze.

7. Harmony & Unity
Consistent color scheme
The cool tones and high-contrast silhouettes make the artwork feel cohesive.
Unified visual elements
The mechanical design, cityscape, and ruins all share a cyberpunk style, making the whole composition feel connected.

8. Symbol
The mechanical eye represents lingering life : The glowing red light suggests artificial intelligence or a cyborg, possibly symbolizing a remnant of consciousness.
The black silhouette represents mystery and the unknown : Since the character’s face is hidden, it creates a sense of suspense, making the story more intriguing.
